Martha Walter studied with William Merritt Chase and at the Academie Julian. She exhibited in many exhibits, winning prizes in several.
A plein-air painter,she is known for her colorful impressionist beach scenes of resorts such as Gloucester and along the French coast. She achieved an international reputation, traveling and painting in France, England, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain and North Africa.
Some of her beach scenes have sold for high prices, one of which went for $266,500.
