American Impressionism

Art, to me, is the interpretation of the impression which nature makes upon the eye and brain."

- Childe Hassam

If you are drawn to Impressionist artists, you appreciate the effects of natural light, just as Impressionist artists insisted on painting "en plain aire" (in open air) rather than in studios. Impressionist paintings seek to convey the emotional excitement of the artist and to evoke the same emotion in others. From Claude Monet ("The Father of Impressionism") to American painters like Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam, Impressionist artists remain favorites of discerning collectors today.

At McDougall Fine Arts Galleries, we specialize in American Impressionist paintings, with particular expertise in Cape Ann artists.

The following is a representative list of American Impressionist painters whose works we are interested in buying. The list is by no means complete; there are too many American Impressionists to list them all. If you are interested in selling a painting by any American Impressionist artist, we'd love to hear from you.

In true American spirit, these 19th-century painters broke away from the National Academy of Design and the Society of American Painters to exhibit independently. Calling themselves "The Ten", the group did not originally include William Merritt Chase. He took the place of John Henry Twachtman upon Twachtman's death in 1902.
